Itinerary

Day 1 Bariloche, Circuito Chico

Morning

Morning transfer to Buenos Aires domestic airport and assistance with check-in (30min).

Direct flight from Buenos Aires to Bariloche (2 hours 20 min).

Meet and greet with your local host, transfer to your hotel (25 min) and assistance with check-in.

 

Afternoon

Pick-up from your hotel to go on the "Circuito Chico", a guided tour of the magnificent area surrounding the town of Bariloche: driving along the banks of the Nahuel Huapi Lake heading west, enjoy your first impressions of Patagonia and postcard-perfect places such as Playa Bonita and Huemul Island.

Crossing the smaller lake Perito Moreno you will stop at the foot of Cerro Campanario, where you will have the opportunity to take a chairlift to the top of the hill for unrivaled views of the surrounding lakes, forests and snow-capped mountains in the distance.

The drive then takes you to the Llao Llao Peninsula, stuck between the northern end of Lake Perito Moreno and lake Nahuel Huapi. Visit the San Eduardo Chapel, an architectural treasure designed by Eduardo Bustillo who is also responsible for the imposing Llao Llao Hotel standing strong on the peninsula.

Day 2 4 Refugios Trek - Day 1: Refugio Frey (Total hiking time: 4-5 Hours)

Morning pickup from your hotel to drive to Cerro Cathedral (30 min) where you will start your hike to the Frey shelter.

Leaving the base of the Cathedral, the trail starts with a gentle walk around Lake Gutiérrez with mirroring views of the surrounding peaks over the water.

The path then goes uphill following the Van Titter stream on the way to the Piedritas shelter. From there, as you keep climbing up towards the Refugio Frey, the lush vegetation becomes sparser and gives way to a more rocky environment.

Enjoy the rest of the afternoon to relax on the shores of Toncek lagoon and enjoy your sublime surroundings or hike to the nearby granite towers, a place that attracts many rock-climbers in the warmer season.

Day 3 4 Refugios Trek - Day 2: Refugio Jakob (Total hiking time: 7-8 Hours)

After a hearty breakfast, head off on the path around Toncek lagoon before hiking up towards the Schmoll lagoon on the edge of Cathedral Hill. Getting to the flat pass known as "La cancha de football (the football pitch) you will have a vantage point of view from where you can catch a good sight of two summits: Cerro Tres Reyes and Cerro Tronador, both overlooking the great lake Nahuel Huapi below.

Going down towards the Rucaco valley you will pass a large scree which will require to be crossed carefully. After lunch in the valley you will hike through dense forest that cuts all the way to another pass right above the treeline close to Mount Brecha Negra before descending towards the Jakob lagoon where the refuge is.

The most adventurous ones should try to go for a swim in the cold waters of the lagoon.

Day 4 4 Refugios Trek - Day 3: Refugio Laguna Negra (Total hiking time: 8-10 Hours)

Early morning breakfast to get ready for the most technical and demanding part of the trek. Set out on a hike to Los Témpanos Lagoon to the base of Pico Refugio, a rock-climbing part will take you to the pass of Pico Refugio from where you will traverse to the pass of Cerro Inocentes on an exposed ridge made of bare rocks and scree before climbing up Cerro Navidad to get 360 degree views of the whole area.

The trail then descends into the valley where you will hike to the Laguna Negra and find your well-deserved rest at the refuge.

Day 5 4 Refugios Trek - Day 4: Back to Bariloche (Total hiking time: 8-9 Hours)

Start your hiking day after breakfast along the shore of Laguna Negra, before climbing up the slopes of Cerro Bailey Willis on the rock ledges sticking out of the mountain.

The track then drops down to the valley below and goes on to the foot of the Pico Turista where another steep and technical climb awaits.

You will be rewarded with the best views of the whole trek before the final descent to the Cerro Lopez shelter where you will have a deserved break before hiking to the bottom of the mountain where your transport will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Bariloche.

Transfer back to your hotel (30 min).

Day at leisure to explore the city and its surroundings.
