Starting in the main square, Plaza 24 de Septiembre, you'll discover a popular gathering place surrounded by palm trees and colonial buildings. Here stands the city's cathedral, built with local brick and featuring two 40-meter towers offering a panoramic view over the city.

Next, you’ll visit the Santa Cruz History Museum, housed in an elegant early 20th-century Art Nouveau building. The museum showcases the historical and cultural heritage of eastern Bolivia through a range of engaging exhibits. If the museum is closed during your visit, an alternative experience will be arranged.

The city’s dramatic history and well-preserved colonial architecture earned it the distinction of being Bolivia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Begin your visit with the iconic Real Casa de Moneda (Royal Mint of Potosí), built between 1753 and 1773. As cars are not allowed on the Island of the Sun where you will spend the night, we ask you to bring only one small piece of luggage for the night (carry on or backpack).

Your larger suitcases will be taken and stored at your hotel in Copacabana where you will stay the following night.

Morning

Depart from La Paz toward Copacabana, passing through the scenic Tiquina Strait, a narrow section of Lake Titicaca crossed by boat. Enjoy the journey across this sacred body of water before arriving in Copacabana, a lakeside town known in Aymara as Kota Kawana, meaning “view of the lake.” Once an ancient ceremonial site, it’s now Bolivia’s most important Catholic sanctuary, reflecting a rich fusion of pre-Columbian traditions and colonial influence.

Visit the Copacabana Cathedral, a 17th-century church showcasing rare Moorish-style architecture. Inside, you’ll find the revered Virgen Morena (Brown Virgin), a symbol of deep spiritual devotion in the region.

Afternoon

Board a private motorboat and sail across the shimmering waters of Lake Titicaca to Moon Island (Koati Island). Explore the ancient ruins of Iñak Uyu, also known as the Palace of the Virgins of the Sun. This Inca temple was once home to noble women tasked with artisanal, ceremonial duties — and possibly sacrificial roles — reserved for those closest to the empire’s spiritual and political power.

Continue your boat journey to the legendary Island of the Sun, cradle of Inca mythology.

Day 12 LAKE TITICACA, ISLAND OF THE SUN, TRANSFER TO LA PAZ

Morning

Begin your day with a peaceful breakfast overlooking Lake Titicaca from the Island of the Sun, a place steeped in Inca legend. According to myth, the Sun God Inti sent his children, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, to this very island to begin their journey to Cusco, where they would found the Inca Empire. Before the Spanish arrived, the island served as a sacred center for worship and royal ceremonies.

Visit the archaeological site of Pilkokaina, once an Inca palace. Its stone walls and trapezoidal niches were used to honor Wakas, sacred figures central to Andean spirituality. This site offers insight into the imperial presence on the island.

Afternoon

Explore the Sacred Fountain of the Three Waters, an Inca marvel that showcases the civilization’s advanced hydraulic knowledge. This spring is believed to be spiritually linked to Cusco and was revered as a purifying and ceremonial site.

Then, take part in an Apthapi, a traditional Aymara communal meal. Shared on the shores of Lake Titicaca, this collective feast offers a meaningful cultural experience, all set against a backdrop of the majestic Cordillera Real, whose snow-capped peaks appear to float above the water.

Return to Copacabana by private motorboat, taking in the final views of the sacred lake. From there, journey back to La Paz by private transport, once again crossing the Tiquina Strait — the narrow channel that links the lake’s two great bodies of water — as you reflect on a day filled with mythology, history, and Andean tradition.
