The surrounding protected rainforest is home to 9 species of primates, 500 species of birds and more than 100 fish species.

Pañacocha (Piranha Lake, in Quechua) is a water-flooded ecosystem, the perfect habitat for the infamous piranha, as well as the water monkey fish (arawana) and white caiman.

Afternoon

After lunch, you will be doing the paddling on your kayak, and the most adventurous ones will enjoy a nice refreshing swim in the Piranha Lake. It is not as dangerous as it sounds!

Back on board of the Manatee, an interesting lecture and an educational documentary about the region will be waiting for you.

You will then visit a Quechua Cultural Center, where you will learn about Amazon communities and their ancestral culture, traditions, and cuisine. Members of the local community will teach you about indigenous lifestyles along the Napo River and you will have the opportunity to support the local community by purchasing handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs.

Important notes

If necessary, it is imperative to get your yellow fever vaccine at least ten days prior to departure.

Weather conditions in the Amazon rainforest vary greatly depending on the two seasons: the wet season from December to May and the dry season from June until November. Regardless of the season, you have to be prepared for rain throughout the year, although it rains a lot less during the dry season.

Both seasons provide amazing experiences with plenty of birds, wildlife and flora to see.  If you prefer cruising and watching scenery and wildlife from the vessel then we recommend traveling during the wet season. If you prefer hiking through the jungle, then we recommend traveling during the dry season.

Itineraries are subject to change due to weather conditions at certain times of the year. With the change in river water levels the sailing hours may vary. Excursions may be modified at the discretion of the crew.

Visits to the local villages are carefully planned to avoid a negative impact in their cultural identity.
