Quito Historic Center
San Francisco de Quito, most often called Quito, is the capital city of Ecuador. The Quito historic center is rich with the art and architecture of the Spanish colonial era. The monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo, as well as the Church and Jesuit College of La Compañía are perfect examples of Colonial Baroque, with lushly rich interiors that are a fascinating mix of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and native art. This beautiful city with its 400 years of history stands witness to the time the Spanish conquistadors founded the city in 1534. This history led UNESCO to declare it the first World Heritage Site in 1978 and is sure to be a highlight of your Ecuador trip.
