Sajama National Park
The small town of Sajama would be note worthy in its own right, an off the beaten track locale of simple, friendly people situated in a desert bowl surrounded by beautiful snow capped mountains studded with smoking volcanoes. No wonder the people are so happy, cradled by all this beauty.
But Sajama is also home to the Sajama National Park, a protected enclave that is the oldest national park in Bolivia. This park was founded in 1939 to protect the vicuna, a small camel like animal that was so prized for its soft wool that it became endangered.
The park itself is located in a desert plain, but also encompasses Sajama volcano, the highest mountain in Bolivia and so offers the visitor the best of both extremes of the rugged beauty of Bolivia.
